IN CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Spike
Canon: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
OU/AU/OC: OU
Canon Point: After Season 4, Episode 26
History: MLP Wikia Episodes
Personality:
Spike was hatched and raised by the unicorn (now alicorn) and main character Twilight Sparkle, and he looks up to her as an older sister figure. Because of this, he tends to see himself as closer to a pony than a dragon, however this has led to some deep insecurity issues about his draconic background and the stereotypical image of a dragon. Sometimes he feels that he is out of place in Ponyville, or he feels he is unable to measure up to the stereotypical image of a dragon. This is highly evident when he goes on a ‘self discovery’ journey, and meets a group of teenage dragons. They tease him about his size, his personality, and his lack of bravery. By wanting to fit in with the dragons around him (and be what the majority of the land’s inhabitants think a dragon should be) Spike initially succumbs to the peer pressure of the other young dragons, and acts out of character. However it is easy to see that he feels uncomfortable doing this, and reverts back to his playful, loyal self, rather than the bullying, egotistical and cruel version he tried to become.
Spike also appears to have abandonment issues, however it is difficult to see where these originally may have developed - it may be tied into his insecurities about being a dragon raised by a unicorn. There are times when Spike is scared that Twilight might not need him anymore, and he becomes extremely upset when he feels that she may abandon him. However Twilight has never indicated that this would ever happen. In one episode, a magic ‘door’ shows that Spike’s deepest fear is Twilight telling him that she has no use for him anymore. When the real Twilight manages to snap him out of the spell, Spike is crying at seeing this deepest fear come about.
Despite these underlying issues, Spike is actually a very optimistic and playful character. He often encourages Twilight to relax and play instead of studying so hard, and is one of the first to encourage her to make friends. He often cheers her up, gives her confidence in herself and her abilities, and tries to make sure she knows how to have fun and not overwork herself. He is her ‘number 1 assistant’, and helps her by finding/sorting her vast library, scribing for her, and assisting with spells (or being the guinea pig). Because of Twilight’s influence (and her strong opinion of ‘hard work’ and organisation), Spike is very mature and responsible in his role as her assistant.
Spike also has close relationships with the other five main ponies. He always shows concern if one of them is in trouble, and will try to cheer them up if they are upset. He is a bit of a ‘fan boy’ in regards to Rainbow Dash - he is in her fan club, and is the writer of her ‘autobiography’ (as she calls it). Spike also has a huge crush on Rarity, and despite his dragon nature to want to hoard things (particularly gems), he would willingly give them all to Rarity if she desired. It appears that Rarity is well aware of Spike’s crush, but never mentions it - whether this is to refrain from hurting Spike’s feelings, or because she actually likes him back is not clear.
Spike is extremely loyal, even so far as to honour the ‘dragon code’ - if someone saves his life, under the dragon code he owes them and needs to help them in any way possible to the best of his abilities (even if it’s a detriment to the pony he’s trying to help). Spike associates the honouring of the dragon code to being a noble dragon, and does not shy away from this debt.
While Spike isn't the bravest of the group, he has shown that he can be brave when forced to. An example of this is when he saves Applejack from timberwolves. Instead of saving himself as directed by Applejack, Spike stays to protect her and is even brave enough to physically attack the timberwolves by throwing things at them, despite knowing that he had a very small chance of success.
Spike’s youth is also very evident, despite the responsibilities given to him by Twilight. He likes to gorge on icecream and cake (and gems, when he has the chance), dress up in costumes, makes faces over things he doesn't like, and whines when he doesn't want to do something / doesn't like something. He also has a habit of falling asleep when he is tired, akin to a young child.
Occasionally the ‘dragon’ side of Spike comes out. He can be greedy, manipulative and sly when he wants to be. This is particularly evident in one episode when Spike begins to receive presents for his birthday. When he realises that he can get things for free, he becomes greedy and uses his birthday as an excuse to get more presents. Eventually his greed overpowers his intelligence, and all he can think about is acquiring more ‘things’. This sudden increase in the greedy side of his nature causes him to grow exponentially in this episode until Rarity is able to help him revert back to his usual self. Spike has also manipulated ponies into giving him more gems for what he believes will be an easy job (pet-sitting). He throws aside the responsibility of this role as his sole focus is to acquire more gems. When he displays this greedy side, he is often rebuked by Twilight, which shows their relationship to be more like a family.
Strengths:
+ Loyal: He is always there for Twilight and the other ponies, and helps Twilight when he sees that she is in trouble.
+ Optimistic: He is usually very positive, and helps boost Twilight’s confidence when she is stressed or upset over something.
+ A good friend: Spike listens and tries to help when he sees that they are in trouble
+ Playful / teasing: He likes to joke, laugh and be sarcastic. Being a baby dragon, there are times when he acts like the child he is.
+ Learns from his mistakes: Spike has shown that when he makes a mistake (such as becomes overly greedy), he can learn from these.
+ Musical talent (piano and singer): He is an adept piano player and singer.
+ Can cook and scribe well: He is shown to have decent cooking skills and is a good scribe. He is used to using a quill and parchment.
+ Caring: He cares strongly about his friends, especially Twilight, who he looks up to as an older sister. He also has a pet phoenix (briefly), which shows that he cares about other animals.
+ Is a post office: Spike burps letters back and forth between Twilight and Princess Celestia using his dragon breath.
+/- Confident: Spike’s confidence comes and goes due to his insecurities. He tends to be overly confident on the outside (probably to cover up his insecurities), but this show of confidence can easily be destroyed.
Weaknesses:
+/- Confident: Spike’s confidence comes and goes due to his insecurities. He tends to be overly confident on the outside (probably to cover up his insecurities), but this show of confidence can easily be destroyed.
- Greedy: As he is a dragon by nature, he has a tendency to be greedy, and hoards or gorges on various things he likes (gems, icecream, cupcakes etc). He sometimes shows a lack of self-control.
- Insecure: He is unsure of his identity/purpose, and boasts to cover up for this insecurity.
- Sneaky: Tied to his greed, he has lied and manipulated ponies to get what he wants, although this is rare, and he doesn't do it with the purpose of being nasty or cruel.
- Childish: Due to his age, Spike can be childish sometimes, and whines and complains about things he doesn't like or doesn't want to do.
Possessions: A photo of him and PeeWee, his chef hat, the bow tie covered with jewels that Rarity gave him.
Pony/Animal Type: Dragon

First Person:
[The scroll unravels to reveal a baby purple and green dragon with big green eyes giving gun fingers to the scroll. He speaks in a confident tone]
Spike the Dragon here, otherwise known as Number One Assistant to Princess of Friendship Twilight Sparkle, and also your friendly neighbourhood pet sitter. [That’s right, he namedropped].
For a mere one shiny, sparkly, tasty, delicious, taste bud exploding…[Spike has started licking his lips and actually drooling a little at this point]….ahem, gem, I will mind your pets while you run errands, go out of town or if you just need a day off.
And you know, feel free to throw in a bonus gem or two, because you wouldn't want a poor baby dragon to starve or anything, would you? You could even bake me a sapphire cupcake. Or maybe a triple layer ruby cake? Emerald chip cookies…oh man I love those…mmm topaz marzipan...[He’s off in a daydream of gem related sweet treats now. All any pony will see at the end is the scroll shorting out as he drools on it.]
Third Person:
Spike didn't quite remember falling or passing out in the middle of Ponyville, but he did have a splitting headache when he came to.
“Ugh rough night,” Spike groaned, lying in the dirt for a moment, holding one claw up to his head. What had he even been doing the night before? A flash of balloons and cupcakes and castles crossed his mind. Twilight’s New Castle and Title of Princess of Friendship Celebration (or, as Spike liked to refer to it: Kicking Tirek's Evil Butt Party). How could he forget that? Quite easily apparently, if his current predicament was anything to go by.
“I need to lay off Pinkie’s sapphire cupcakes. I think I’m having a gem withdrawal…” he mumbled as he slowly sat up, blinking.
He looked around to get his bearings. “What the…?” He rubbed his eyes and looked around again. Nope, that hadn't changed things. His eyes widened. Spike was pretty sure the town hadn't had so many new buildings or ponies when he last saw it. In fact, that was a lot of new ponies.
“What is this? Is Twilight’s new fan club in town or something?” Spike muttered as he took it all in. But that wouldn't account for all the random new buildings he saw. Or the distinct lack of one very large, main building. Twilight’s castle wasn't there anymore.
“I really need to lay off those cupcakes…”
