[Today was just not a good day for Spike. After getting off the pokegear to everypony, Spike's Trapinch was really, really unimpressed. And Spike knew it. And now he knew how sharp those teeth were. The Trapinch had chased him up a tree, and then sat waiting for him to come down. There had seemed to be a gleam of...something...in its beady eyes that Spike did not like. And of course, the tree had been 'occupied'.]

[By a weird looking bluish tree nut thing.]

[Let's just say Spike also found out what 'Selfdestruct' does. On the upside, he 'caught' his first pokemon. It wasn't a moment he really wanted to remember.]

[The feed clicks on to an extremely disheveled and unhappy Spike - his hair has leaves and twigs in it, one eyebrow is gone, and he has a cut on his cheek which is bleeding lightly.]

Princess Cadence? I really hope you can hear me. It's Spike. Twilight said we're close by to each other and that she's coming to pick us up.

[An annoyed 'TRAAAAAAAAAA' can be heard in the background, and Spike visibly flinches.]

Where are you, and I'll come find you? [If he can ever get out of this Celestia-forsaken tree...]

[Spike was unexpectedly engulfed by Cadence’s hug, and he hugged her back tightly, relieved to see someone familiar. It was weird – for once he could actually hug somepony back properly, as his arms actually reached all the way around Cadence’s waist.

[Despite how he looked and he felt, Spike put on his ‘I’m a big dragon’ face, giving Cadence a big, confident smile and waving off the whole ‘up a tree’ incident like it was nothing.]

I’m fine, don’t worry! My, er…partner animal?...and I were just…um…bonding?

[Because she’ll totally believe that...]

He’s around here somewhere. Watch out, he’s pretty…uh...well…

[And of course his Trapinch chose that moment to stomp out of the underbrush. And then just sat there, giving Spike the ‘evil eye’. Spike took a cautious step backwards].

(Nope, not believing that. Still, she'll give Spike the benefit of the doubt.

Once she noticed Spike defensively moving away from the Pokemon, she instinctively stood between them, giving the Trapinch a very assertive glare. Poor Spike must've been having trouble getting acquainted with his Pokemon, but Cadence will definitely see to it that there's no longer hostility between them.

She remains stalwart, but her gaze is intently focused on the Trapinch.)

[If Spike's Trapinch had eyebrows, Spike was sure it would have raised one at Cadence. Spike peeked out from behind her, worried that his Trapinch would charge them.]

[Instead it decided to roll in the dirt, completely dismissively.]

[Spike wasn't sure whether to be happy or annoyed.]

I don't know what its problem is. I fed it and everything! Maybe it just doesn't like me.

I don't even know what I'm supposed to do with it.

(Whatever the case, it's at least not bothering Spike for the moment and that's all that matters to Cadence right now.)

It might need a little discipline. It usually isn't easy, but they have to learn to behave and acknowledge you as their trainer.

...Oh, that reminds me! Has anypony told you if you're going to be a trainer or a breeder?

[Spike's feeling kind of silly. Of course now his pokemon acts relatively normal. He humphs, stepping out from behind Cadence]

Of course I have to get stuck with the difficult one.

Er...no? What are they?

It may be difficult, but I think you can handle the challenge. Twilight told me you already have experience taking care of animals; taking care of Pokemon may be something very similar.

They're actually different ways to raise your Pokemon. Trainers coach their Pokemon for battling and fighting while breeders raise them and help them breed. They're very appropriate names.

[Spike puffs up his chest a little at the confidence Cadence has in him...despite his current pokemon situation]

I'm sure I'll have no problems handling them.

Oh, that seems logical. How do you know which you are?

I asked the scientists in the lab and they told me that's on your Trainer Card. Even if your not a trainer, everypony gets one. It's pretty much your identification card.

Breeders also receive an apron, so if you should check for one of those, too.

[Trust Cadence to be so sensible in this situation. Spike was impressed at how calmly she was adawasn't to all this]

Oh I have that here somewhere! [Spike searches his pockets and pulls out the card triumphantly.]

Got it! Hmmm...it says I'm a breeder. I guess that's better than making them fight each other.

[He checks on his Trapinch, which has now appeared to have fallen asleep in the sun. At least it wasn't causing any more problems.]

What are you, Princess Cadence?

Really? I'm a breeder, too! It looks like we'll be learning about this at the same time.

(Cadence is rather enjoying the idea. Granted, she was still a bit worried about how things at home were going, but talking to others at least helped clarify things. Besides, the place didn't look so bad...

A cautious look over at the Trapinch, noticing that her Audino is watching it curiously. Then she remembers something.)

Oh, there's also a guide to breeding in your bag, too! I was reading it before I received your call.

[Spike gives her a big grin.]

That's great! It'll be much easier with two of us. I wonder what Twilight and the others are?

...of course there's a book. [Sigh]

[Spike really hasn't looked at what's in his backpack, so he proceeds to empty it out, looking for the book. He finally pulls it out and flicks through it. He frowns.]

Isn't there any way to tell what they are? [He gestures towards the two pokemon].

I think everypony is matched to the one that best fits them. I'm not entirely sure about that, but I get the feeling Rainbow Dash is a trainer.

(She gives another look to the two Pokemon. After a moment's thought, Cadence takes out her PokeGear.)

One of the books said this can tell you all about a Pokemon, but I'm not sure how to do it...

[Spike snorted. A trainer would be the ideal role for Rainbow Dash]

Yeah you know how competitive she is. I bet Applejack is a trainer as well. I can’t see her as a breeder. Fluttershy would definitely be a breeder. There’s no way she’d want to make pokemon fight.

[Spike’s ears perked. He pulled out his own pokegear, and flipped through the book until he found a picture of it.]

Hmm. It says there’s a…program on this thing…called a Pokedex. If you point the pokegear at the pokemon, it will identify it. Oh well, let’s try it.

[Being used to using fingers (well, claws) unlike Cadence, he flicked the gear open, and found the setting labelled ‘Pokedex’. He cautiously pointed the gear at his sleeping Trapinch, hoping that it wouldn’t wake up. There was a beep and a screen popped up out of the pokegear.]

Trapinch. The Ant Pit pokemon. Its big jaws crunch through boulders. Because its head is so big, it has a hard time getting back upright if it tips over on to its back.

[Spike started as his gear ‘spoke’ in an electronic voice.]

That was weird. Okay, so you’re a Trapinch. [Spike’s Trapinch opened one eye a crack, then closed it again, going back to sleep. Spike rolled his eyes and looked back at the screen.].

There’s a picture and a whole bunch of numbers and stuff about him. Try it on yours!

[Spike is eager to know what Cadence has]

(Cadence observes with noticeable intrigue. Spike is already so used to finger-like appendages, this probably isn't much of a change for him (for his hands, anyway). Still, Cadence does the same with her PokeGear, flicking on the PokeDex option and pointing it at her Pokemon.)

Audino, the Hearing Pokemon. Using the feelers on its ears, it can tell how someone is feeling or when an egg might hatch.

That's amazing...both for the PokeDex and Audino! I didn't know it could do that!

(Cadence is now acting like a filly on Hearth's Warming morning, what with how eagerly she reads through the information on the PokeDex.)

[Spike studies Cadence’s Audino as she scans it with the pokegear. It doesn’t seem hostile at all, rather, it appeared quite friendly compared to Spike’s Trapinch. He let out a laugh at Cadence’s excitement. It was catching.]

This is kind of cool! That’s a neat trick for a breeder.

[He glances over at his Trapinch.]

My Trapinch doesn’t seem anywhere near as useful...or as friendly.

[And on cue, Spike’s Trapinch opens its mouth wide in a mock yawn, showing off those teeth. Spike winces, remembering how much they hurt. His eyes suddenly light up.]

Oh right!

[Spike carefully pulls out a poke ball from his pocket, looking unsure of what to do with it.]

I kind of caught another pokemon. It blew up in my face, and then it was really hurt, so I put it in the ball so it wouldn’t get worse. I hope someone can heal it…

(The Audino gives the Trapinch a wary look. Those were some very sharp teeth, teeth she would very much like to avoid.)

Maybe your Trapinch is better at fighting? It looks aggressive enough to be a fighter, don't you think?

(Cadence looks over the Pokeball.)

Then we have to take it to the nearest Pokemon Center. One of the books recommends taking your Pokemon there when they're hurt or exhausted. They're in large towns, so it shouldn't be too hard finding one.

But...are there any other Pokemon nearby that got hurt from it?

[Spike snorts]

Aggressive isn't quite the term I'd use.

[He brightened on hearing that his pokemon could be healed, but it didn't sound like they could do it anywhere close. Maybe when Twilight arrived, she'd know where a close Pokemon Centre was?]

Well...he did go off into the bushes over there [Spike waved in the general direction] and fight a few things. I think most of them got away, but we should check.

[A little sheepishly]

I was sort of stuck in that tree until you came along.

[Before Cadence can respond one way or the other on the subject of them going to check out the bushes, the conversation is interrupted by the sound of rushing wind.

Ripping through the sky at incredible speed, a majestic Dragonite soars over the top of the trees and straight into New Bark, stopping at the edge of town and steadily starting to descend. Soon enough, Twilight is visible on the dragon's back.

As the massive Pokemon lands, she hops off and looks around, but she's on the wrong side of the hulking behemoth to see her two recently regained family members, and is looking at the town rather than over at the nearby tree.]

Spike? Cadence? It's Twilight, I've come to pick you up!

(Just as Cadence is about to respond (spoilers: she was going to go check), the rather large dragon makes its very dramatic entrance. As intimidating as it was, seeing Twilight atop the beast brought a large sense of relief.

...And seeing her get off the wrong side puts Cadence in a fit of giggles. She peeks over from the other side of the dragon.)

You sure know how to make an entrance, Twilight.

Woah.

[That's all Spike has to say. He's a little speechless. He puts on a fake happy, confident smile - not intimidated or worried at all.]

Twilight! Over here!

[Spike skirts widely around the much larger dragon, and all but runs up to Twilight to give her a big hug. She looked so weird as a human!]

You got here so fast.

[Sudden Spike hug! She returns it eagerly and rubs his hair a bit.]

Are. Good, I'm glad you're both okay.

[The Dragonite looks down curiously at Spike, then Cadence, then lifts a hand and gives a little hello wave.]

Meet my starter. He's been with me since I came to this world, and he's one of my strongest Pokemon if not my absolute strongest.

I, ah... named him after you, Spike.

(She returns a wave to the Dragonite, pairing it with a smile.)

He's so adorable! He's a big, strong dragon. Just like you, Spike!

(Oh, and she proceeds to give Twilight a much needed hug. Can't forget hugs.)

[A coldness grips Spike at Twilight’s comment and at Cadence’s innocent follow up, and he takes a step back, devastated. The friendliness of the dragon just makes the situation so much worse.]

[In a small voice]

You…you gave him my name?

You…replaced me already?

[Tears start to well up in Spike’s eyes and he takes another step backwards, away from both Twilight and her dragon. His worst fear was unfolding right in front of him.]

[She's in the middle of happily accepting Cadence's hug, butting her big sister under the chin gently, when she hears Spike's anguished question.]

Replaced... what? No, Spike, no! Absolutely not!

[She pulls away from Cadence and rushes over to grab him in her arms.]

I named him after you because I missed you, and with the way this world works... I wasn't sure if I'd even see you again while I was here.
